Early Keyboard Instrument Plans

These plans will allow anyone with a sound, practical knowledge of woodworking tools and technique to make their own early keyboard instrument. No prior knowledge of musical instrument making is assumed, however, be aware that these are major woodworking projects.

Early keyboard instruments are made entirely of wood, apart from wire, pins, and some accessories. The original instruments were made without the benefit of modern power tools, but the present day maker will, of course, find advantage in the use of whatever power tools he/she is competent to operate.

You can view sample pages from some of the keyboard plans here. (Use the back button in your web browser to return to this page)

To help you decide which project is best for you, read Which Keyboard for Me.

Sets of Working Drawings

These show each stage of construction, so that the maker has step-by-step instructions and illustrations to follow. There are between 20 and 30 drawings per set. A full size keyboard and soundboard plan are included to enable accurate positioning of pins, bridges etc.
