BookCrossing

Here at Sutherland Studios we're pretty keen BookCrossers - "But what in earth is BookCrossing, and is it safe?", I hear you ask...

bookcrossing

n. The practice of leaving a book in a public place to be picked up and read by others, who then do likewise. (Added to the Concise Oxford English Dictionary in August 2004)

BookCrossing is a global book club that crosses time and space. It's a reading group that knows no geographical boundaries. The books we leave in the wild are free... but it's the act of freeing books is at the heart of BookCrossing.

Book trading has never been more exciting, more serendipitous, than with BookCrossing. The goal, simply, is to make the whole world a library. BookCrossing is a book exchange of infinite proportion, the first and only of its kind. It's also tons of fun!

At BookCrossing.com you'll find tens of thousands of book reviews, book ratings, and book recommendations, because each time a book changes hands BookCrossing members can leave journal entries telling the world of their experiences.

The "3 Rs" of BookCrossing...

  • Read a good book (you already know how to do that)

  • Register it (along with your journal comments), get a unique BCID (BookCrossing ID number), and label the book with these labels, or use my free Butterfly Book labels.

  • Release it for someone else to read (give it to a friend, leave it on a park bench, hide it in a tree, "forget" it in a coffee shop...). You will be notified by e-mail each time someone records a journal entry for that book. If you make Release Notes on the book, others can Go Hunting for it and try to find it!

It's easy, absolutely free and absolutely private, too. To join in too, simply grab a book or two from your shelves now (they're not doing anyone any good there, are they?), sign up, and register them at BookCrossing. Jot down the URL and the BCID you'll get from the site inside the covers, and then give them away or leave them where someone will find them.

And finally, yes, it's quite safe, although it can be addictive - you have been warned!

If you decide to join the BookCrossing family (it's anonymous and free!), when you sign up you can say that you were referred by AussieNisi. That bit is at the bottom of the Join BookCrossing page.
