Did You Know?Despite having a French name, papier mâché was first developed in ancient China. The Chinese invented paper during the Han Dynasty (BC 206 - AD 220); lacquered papier mâché helmets have been found from this period. The French were the first Europeans to make papier mâché, from the mid-1600s. From there it spread to England, and became very popular. It was widely used for mouldings and decorative features in houses. Charles Frederick Bielefeld was a major innovator and producer of papier mâché ornaments. In 1853, he even had ten prefabricated papier mâché cottages shipped from England to Melbourne, Australia! s |
